Summary of 2010 Pricing Model and Licences

The Society for General Microbiology (SGM) journals are moving to a tiered pricing structure in 2010. Within the new pricing model, institutions are classified into one of five tiers based on various attributes of size and type.

SGM Site Licences have also been updated, making it easier for customers to provide access across multiple locations within their organization. Therefore, customers will also need to consider what type of licence they require for access: tiers 1–3 qualify for a Basic Site Licence; tier 4 qualifies for a Basic or an Extended Basic Licence; and tier 5 qualifies for a Multi-Site/Consortia/Non-Standard Licence.

Current customers will receive notification of their allocation in advance of renewals. You can also use our Journal Tier Allocator to check your tier and licence requirements, or view the criteria below:

Site Licence Definitions and Options

A site licence is different from a physical 'site'. For example, a university with several separate campuses within the same city has several physical sites, but requires only a Basic Site Licence based on the definitions shown below.

Customers from tiers 1–4 access the journals according to the following site licence.

1. Basic Site licence (tiers 1–4 - set prices available)

A Basic Site Licence* entitles access to:
a single physical site (geographically contiguous buildings) belonging to one organisation; or
multiple campuses within one city that are part of a single organizational unit, administered centrally and sharing a common Director or Chief Executive Officer

*Certain types of organization claiming a Basic Site Licence are restricted to on-site access only (i.e. access is only allowed for users within the physical site and not remotely). These include: primary and secondary schools; private practice offices or private clinics; professional societies, trade unions, industry trade associations; and national and state libraries.

2. Extended Basic Site Licence (tier 4 - set prices available)

An Extended Basic Licence entitles access to:
two affiliated organizations (such as a research university and an associated medical school) based in separate, single physical sites; or
two affiliated organizations (such as a research university and an associated medical school), each of which is a single organizational unit but each of which may be composed of several campuses within a single city (with overall access for the two organizations in up to two cities). Each individual organizational unit shares a common Director or Chief Executive Officer

3. Multi-Site, Consortia and Non-Standard Licence (tier 5 – customer to contact SGM for a quotation)

A Multi-Site Licence entitles access to:
organizations or groups of organizations with more than two independently administered/managed locations within one city; or
two non-affiliated organizations based in separate physical sites and separately administered/managed making a joint purchase; or
organizations or groups of organizations in more than two cities, states or countries, with administration of this licence being done centrally on behalf of all locations

SGM reserves the right to issue Tier 5 customers with separate signed agreements for access to SGM Journals Online; however, in the absence of such an agreement, the following terms and conditions will apply. Please contact tiers{at}sgm.ac.uk or complete our request form.
